As the founding director of Green Map System, Wendy Brawer promotes sustainability through Green Maps of the natural and cultural environment in more than 600 cities in 55 countries. Her work has been covered by scores of print and broadcast news outlets worldwide. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and was Designer in Residence at the Smithsonian Institution's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

Beginning in Manhattan with the celebrated Green Apple Map, Brawer pioneered the use of collaborative, interactive, web-based cartography to gather and present key local environmental information as an aid to political action, lifestyle and recreational choices, ecotourism, and green marketing. The Green Map System gives citizen mapmakers around the world the tools to create their own unique resources. The program has awards and recognitions from the US EPA, the President's Council on Sustainable Development, the United Nations, the World Urban Forum, and the Environmental Media Association. The Open Green Map sustainability mapping platform has been honored as Best Tool for Green Travelers by Treehugger.com.

Brawer and the movement she unleashed have been featured in publications from Newsday to The Oregonian, from the International Herald Tribune to The Jakarta Post, from Skanska Dagbladet in Malmö, Sweden, to the mass-market Mainichi Shimbun in Japan. I.D. magazine selected her as one of 40 Socially Responsible Designers, and Utne Reader placed her on its list of 50 Visionaries Changing Your World. The Yves Rocher Foundation in Paris has honored her as a Woman of the Earth.

Her other leadership roles include co-founding 02NYC, the first American chapter of the pioneering international environmental design organization o2, and serving as advisor to the UNESCO Social Design Network. She has been Environmental Chair of the Industrial Designers Society of America, a New York board member of Architects/Designers/ Planners for Social Responsibility, and a member of the Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board. She has taught at New York University, Cooper Union, and the Parsons School of Design.

As principal of her own firm, Modern World Design, Brawer has developed innovative approaches to waste reduction, solar education, traffic calming, and community participation. Clients range from the Times Square Business Improvement District to Broward County, Florida, and from Manhattan Plaza to the Liberty Science Center.
