A native of suburban Philadelphia and Chicago, Joel earned degrees in journalism and history from the University of Wisconsin before launching his career in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, followed by stops in Madison, St. Louis, and Kansas City.
He joined the Royals broadcast team in 2008 and has covered four World Series, two Super Bowls, and countless defining moments in sports. Joel won a Mid-America Emmy Award for reporting in 2001, reflecting a career built on preparation, integrity, and connection. He serves on the board of directors of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
