The Power of One Story:
Domestic violence and sexual assault advocate, educator, and speaker; Tara made it her life's purpose to help survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault after she almost lost her life by the hands of her boyfriend. Tara's abuser was a "best-friend" from high school, one that she reconnected with fourteen years after graduating. Within six short months after beginning their relationship, he brutally attacked her - nearly taking her life. Unbeknownst to her, Tara soon learned that he had a long history of abusive behavior, going back to when they were in high school together. After learning this it became especially important to her to stop abuse at an early age and made it a mission to speak to teenagers about the dangers of teen dating violence, and sexual assault and how to recognize the signs of abuse, as well as the importance of healthy boundaries and relationships. She has spoken at high schools and colleges throughout Colorado, has led group victim advocacy trainings, presented at multiple domestic violence conferences, and facilitated adult and teen psycho-educational domestic violence empowerment groups. Tara has been a guest on the Dr. Phil show, has been featured numerous times on multiple news channels about her experience with domestic violence and sexual assault, and has had articles written about her experience in local newspapers, The Gazette and The Independent. She was employed as a confidential victim's advocate with TESSA, and continues to work closely with them; serving on the Board of Directors, representing them as a community advocate and is Chair of a Survivors Advisory Panel. Tara's story is featured in a coffee table book titled "Survivor's Celebrating Life Beyond Domestic Violence." Tara is very active with the organization Break the Silence against Domestic Violence, the National voice of domestic violence; she served on their Board of Directors for two years, and is now a member of the Speakers Bureau. Tara's passion for speaking out and putting an end to domestic violence has been passed on to her two teenagers daughters who often advocate with her to help raise awareness and to put an end to domestic violence.
