Dean Akers
LCAM, CMCA
FL, USDean is a CEO that grows his businesses and those , who he helps by teaching empowerment and the skills of working on the business, not in the business. His diversity of business experiences has allowed him to come to a conclusion that " All businesses are the same". His proclaimed best attribute in business is " I think like a child", meaning he has very few filters and eliminates the self talk that hurts so many business leaders. He is a master at uncovering the obvious, 99% of all is recommendations or strategies come directly from the ones that don't have one, ie: he gets them to take their filters off.
Dean has mastered the art form of seizing opportunities in any situation. As a University of Florida graduate he joined a company in Lakeland Florida as a warehouse runner. By the age of 28 he was made the COO/Vice President of Sales. It was during the recession of the 80's. Under the philosophies of playing the cards you are dealt and maximizing every opportunity with each customer interaction he lead this organization from 50 million in sales to 103 million 2 years later. This was done with the same 300 folks that did 50 million.
At 30 he wanted his own business so he bought a chain of tire stores. This became a fix it program. He grew it from a financially broke company to the leading commercial tire company in the state of Florida. He sold it to Don Olson tire and retired at age 40.
Boredom set in and he was off to several other ventures and finally started Akers Construction. He grew that in the 90's slowdown from startup to 36 million in sales over 4 years and sold it to a larger strategic company and retired again.
Two years later, he was approached by the founders of Ideal Image to help them with the company strategy. He did and became a stockholder and CEO. He grew the company from a single location in south Tampa to 67 locations across the United States doing 70 plus million in sales. He was the lead in raising capital and finally after 6 aggressive term sheets out of six presentations, he choose HIG a Private Equity Fund. They funded 6 million in liquidity to the two founders and added some debt for a total of a 16 million dollar raise. This helped the company achieve its growth and EBITDA Goals. The company had a 175 million dollar exit with a strategic buyer in 2011, Steiner Leisure.
Having left Ideal Image he has been speaking and helping companies across the US seize their opportunities. In the end of 2012 Rob Sulzer brought the opportunity for the Hemorrhoidal business to Dean. His background in clinic development, the medical space and investor value lead to the partnership that exist today. He is the Chairman of the company.
The company, HemWell America is an early stage company that Mr. Akers will be growing to a national business. The onset of the company was for the painless cure with office treatment of hemorrhoids. The business plan never anticipated what it would discover. By creating brand awareness with TV, radio, web, social media people would present with hemorrhoids as their issue telling us of the years of suffering without seeing any medical professional. After diagnosis 5 of the 10 had more severe issues including early stage rectal cancer. This has changed the original mission to now becoming the colo-rectal screening agency to help patients and in turn reduce health care cost in this space and catch early stage issues.
Mr. Akers is now Chairman of Hemwell America and has taken on the role of CEO with Nexxtworks. Nexxtworks is a unified communication supplier with customers across the United Sates. His role is to grow the company for the stockholders and create the opportunity for a financial event in 3-5 years.
This unique set of skills gives Mr. Akers the opportunity to help many small emerging companies.
