Mylene Paquette

QC, CANADA
Moved by the resilience of a sick child, Mylène Paquette takes up the challenge of rowing the North Atlantic in 129 days. The passionate sharing of his learning inspires us deeply.

On November 12, 2013, Mylène Paquette has made history by becoming the first person in the Americas to row across the North Atlantic Ocean. Alone at sea, she travels the 5000 km that separate the cities of Halifax in Canada and Lorient in France in 129 days.

It was after a shocking conversation with a seriously ill child while she was working as a beneficiary attendant at the Sainte-Justine Hospital, that Mylène chose to tame her fear of water in order to achieve his dream. After five long years of preparation, of solo sailing on the St. Lawrence River and on the Atlantic with teammates, Mylène finally achieved her feat.

Since her return, Mylène has shared her extraordinary adventure and singular human experience through her conferences across Canada and internationally, both in business, school and to general public.

She was named personality of the year by La Presse / Radio Canada in 2013 and then she published her first book entitled "Dépasser l'horizon" in November 2014 at Les Éditions La Presse. The same year, she received the Nature Inspiration Award from the Canadian Museum of Nature. In 2015, she received the Medal of Honor from the National Assembly of Quebec and the Meritorious Service Cross of the Governor General of Canada. In 2017, she is decorated at the French Consulate of the National Order of Merit of France.

Mylène is dedicated to many causes that are important to her. Spokesperson of the Blue Circle of the Charles Bruneau Foundation, she is also involved in several environmental causes such as the Quebec Environmental Law Centre, the David Suzuki Foundation, the International Film Festival for Environment and the Marine Mammal Research and Education Group.

Today ice canoeist, she is captain of her team of ice canoe, she continues to row while advocating herself for the protection of the St. Lawrence River. Since November 2017, Mylène is now a member of the College of Fellows of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

Beyond her lectures, Mylène Paquette also shares her passion when she hosts evenings and events or through her column "Flots d'idées" published in Espace Plein Air magazine. In 2017, she made her debut as a host with the documentary series "La Grande Traversée" broadcast on Radio-Canada, RDI and Explora.
