NY, USDr. Silvia Mazzula, is a counseling psychologist with extensive research, clinical and evaluation experience on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.
Her programs are grounded in 15 years of research on multicultural competencies, social determinants of health of vulnerable populations. Her research has been funded by prestigious grant awards from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and others. She brings evaluations expertise in developing process, benchmark measures and systemic guidelines to assess equitable and culturally responsive research and scholarship, in social framework evaluation analysis of workplace discrimination and in workforce diversity.
Dr. Mazzula's work has been published in scientific journals, book chapters and encyclopedias. She is Co-Editor of a four-volume encyclopedia, SAGE Encyclopedia on Psychology and Gender by SAGE Publications Inc. and co-author of Ethics for Counselors: Integrating Counseling and Psychology Standards by Springer Publishing Company. She has spoken at 100+ colleges, universities and professional science meetings throughout the country, appeared on NBC TV as an expert on solving racism, and featured on National Public Radio (NPR), USAToday, Washington Times, Insight into Diversity Magazine, San Antonio Express News, and others.
A fierce coach, mentor, and social entrepreneur, Dr. Mazzula has over 20 years experience advancing academic and workforce diversity. Currently, she is a founder and executive director of the Latina Researchers Network, the country's first multi-disciplinary network for Latina researchers, scholars and allies, where she manages program design, incubation and evaluation to support retention and recruitment of PhD level investigators in the academy and advanced research careers. She is nationally respected for her successful outreach to underrepresented populations in advanced research careers: under her leadership, the Network has grown to over 3,000 scholars, researchers, evaluators, professors and academic leaders worldwide. Dr. Mazzula has earned several prestigious grant awards, as Principal Investigator, to support the network, including awards from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Annie E. Casey Foundation, and the American Psychological Association's Commission on Ethnic Minority Recruitment, Retention, and Training in Psychology.
Professional Experience
Dr. Mazzula is a tenured associate professor of psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (only 3% of all professors in the country are Latina) and former President of the Latino Psychological Association of New Jersey. She has served in various leadership boards, currently a member of the Advisory Board for Equal Measure and John Jay College's committees on diversity and on teaching excellence. She received her BA in Biology (Psychology minor) and MA in Counseling and Human Services from The College of New Jersey (CACREP accredited), and MPhil in Counseling and PhD in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University (APA Accredited). She completed her formal doctoral clinical training at Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (formally University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey). Dr. Mazzula was a National Institute of Health-funded post-doctoral research fellow at Columbia University's Division of Child Psychiatry.
Dr. Mazzula is a first generation college student, born in Uruguay, South America, raised in New Jersey, and mother of three boys.
