Rick Hartzell grew up in rural north central Iowa, where he formed a life-long passion for hard work, family values and trying to do the "next right thing" as he moved through his personal and professional life. He is a father of four children, a husband, brother, and friend to many. He has been an athlete and around athletics all his professional life, serving as an administrator, coach and game official. However, he is never far away from the values that were instilled in him during his formative years on the farm. He has won countless awards for his professional work; he has written a highly successful book called "Whistle in a Haystack" which is subtitled "an Iowa farmboys views on Life's Lessons, Leadership and college basketball." Hartzell lives in rural Cedar Falls, Iowa, with his wife Jill and boys, Jackson and Jace.
