Hafed Al-Ghwell is a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council's Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East, where he focuses on the political economy of the Middle East and North Africa.

He also serves as a Senior Adviser with Oxford Analytica, a global risk advisory group, and as a Senior Adviser at Maxwell Stamp International, an international economic consulting firm.

Until December 2014, al-Ghwell served as an Adviser to the Dean of the Board of Executive Directors at the World Bank Group in Washington, DC. Previously at the World Bank, he was an Adviser in the Office of the Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa, and Program Coordinator in the Office of the Vice President of UN and External Affairs (2009-12).

From 2007 to 2009, he was Director of External Affairs and Communications, and a member of the management team, at the Dubai School of Government, a partner of Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Previously, he served as the Head of Public Diplomacy and Information Centers for the World Bank Group (1999-2007).

Before joining the World Bank, Mr. Al-Gwell was a Principle Associate to Foreign Reports Inc., a seventy year-old political economy advisory group for the energy market. He began his career as a young economist trainee in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Al-Ghwell is a regular columnist with Gulf News and Al Jazeera International and is a frequent commentator in international media, including the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, BBC, and National Public Radio.

He holds a BA in economics from the George Washington University, a post graduate certificate from Harvard University, and a post graduate certificate from Stanford University.
