
Debra Jakubec
Debra Jakubec is Regional Director for Alberta and the Northwest Territories (NWT) at the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA).
Debra has an extensive background in non-profit health care, having worked for numerous HIV/AIDS programs prior to her position with the CDA. Her work for HIV Edmonton involved managing street-involved peer projects, bi-cultural Aboriginal community development and human rights work. Debra was Executive Director of HIV Edmonton from 2006 until 2011. She was also selected as one of two Canadian Civil Society representatives to advise the Honorable Minister of Health, Tony Clement, at the United Nations High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS: The Declaration of Commitment on HIV and AIDS.
After a brief period as Executive Director of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton, Debra moved back into the health field and is currently the Regional Director of Alberta and the NWT for the CDA. She now speaks regularly in the media and at events across Alberta about diabetes in the province and the importance of education, support and prevention.
Debra has served as a board member with the Alberta Community Council on HIV, the Canadian AIDS Society (Treasurer) and the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development (Chair). In 2011, Debra received the John DeSmit Citizen of the Year Award from the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wild Rose, one of her proudest accomplishments. Debra is currently the Vice-Chair and Treasurer for the James Tolin Memorial Fund West (JTMF), an Edmonton arts-based foundation. JTMF fights for social justice and the eradication of stigma and discrimination of HIV/AIDS, which includes LGBTQ youth and support services while celebrating the philanthropic spirit of the arts. Debra is also a current core member of the Diabetes, Obesity, Nutrition Strategic Clinical Network at Alberta Health Services.
She holds a degree in Anthropology and attended the Stanford Executive Leadership Program in 2009.
