LDN, UKIt's the 2nd January 2003 and I'm out of the job I adored.
Like a train wreck, twenty-five years in sales and marketing in the corporate world had come crashing to an end in a brutal merger and all I had to show for it was a cheque. A quick calculation suggested that the money wouldn't last long.
My wise old dad told me to "...get out there immediately and network like my life depended on it".
It turns out it did.
I had only ever networked with work colleagues in City bars, so the meeting I went to that freezing January night would be a first.
I sat in the audience with complete strangers and the lady next to me (Tessa) asked what I did for a living.
"Nothing, as of today" I said.
"Then you'll enjoy tonight's speaker; he's from a very special website – I think it will help you". And she winked knowingly.
Sixty minutes later my jaw had dropped and I had discovered something truly startling. Something that would change my life. Seventeen years after that, it is still the foundation of my work.
Back in 2003 it wasn't called Social Media – it was 'Online Social Networking, and I was gripped by its possibilities. The site was called Ecademy and was the forerunner to LinkedIn.
