Curtis Winstead

Colonel (Retired), USAF

WV, US
Retired military Colonel teaches leadership and life success.

Curtis Winstead has a passion for teaching others how to succeed. He believes strongly that leadership is the key to success. He believes that even if you are not a leader in your organization, you are a leader in your life. It starts with personal leadership and continues, from there, to leading people and organizations. He has 27 years of leadership experience to pass on to others so they, too, can be successful in life.

Curtis is a retired military Colonel. As an officer in the United States Air Force, he commanded units five times, leading organizations as small as five personnel and as large as 500 personnel. He learned early in his career that success comes from leveraging his own personality to motivate people to perform at their maximum potential. Using his own leadership style, he rose above his contemporaries to become a successful leader in his field.

After living through several failures in his life, Curtis learned that he had to own up to his shortcomings, work to overcome them, and strive to enhance his natural talents. Through introspection early in his career, he determined what kind of leader he was and used this insight to become a leader that subordinates, peers, and superiors respected immensely. Years later, he received numerous complements from his subordinates such as "I've had 9 commanders...you were the exceptional leader". His superiors consistently ranked him #1 among his contemporaries.

Curtis has spoken at 36 universities in 21 states, teaching leadership to thousands of college students who were learning to be officers in the United States Air Force. Years later, these officers still seek his leadership advice. Throughout his life, Curtis has spoken at numerous functions and served as the Master of Ceremonies on several occasions. He was hand-picked to be a member of the briefing team at the Pentagon where he daily briefed the Secretary of the Air Force and the Air Force Commander. Additionally, he has spoken at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, presented his thoughts about leadership to the Daughters of the American Revolution, and inspired many other organizations.

After surviving the attack on the Pentagon on 9/11/2001, Curtis deployed on three occasions, twice to Operation Iraqi Freedom (Camp Doha, Kuwait and Baghdad, Iraq) and once to Operation Enduring Freedom (Kabul, Afghanistan).  He commanded the 18th Expeditionary Weather Squadron during the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003.  He served as an adviser to the Iraqi National Security Counsel during the surge in 2007 to 2008.  During his final year in the military, he commanded the Headquarters, International Security Assistance Force base in Kabul, Afghanistan from 2011 to 2012.
