Tanya Riemann

B.A.

AB, CANADA
In October 2002 Tanya started Platypi Designs Inc., a web site design company. She now exclusively works with start-ups, small businesses and not-for-profit organizations.

After graduating with an Honours B.A. from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario in 1999, Tanya was tempted to register for another undergraduate degree in Digital Media, as she had gotten a taste of web site design while earning her first degree. Tempting as that was, she entered the workforce instead but after a few short years, she went back to Seneca College to get a post-graduate certificate in web site design and landed a job right out of college.
After a year of working as a web designer for a larger company, Tanya took the leap and started up her own company. This was the start of a never ending learning curve which kept Tanya engaged and excited every day.
There were a few key components that went into the success of Platypi Designs Inc. and those included having mentors, learning how to network effectively, developing strong relationships with business associates, prospects and clients and being actively involved in her community by volunteering and donating her web design skills as a form of event sponsorship to NPOs where she lived.
Over the years the business grew from a sole proprietorship to incorporation with a business partner and staff. Tanya learned how to manage a business with multiple people and made sure that team members were well supported, trusted, motivated, and respected. It was Tanya's goal to provide the "best first job experience ever" and she believes this was accomplished as to this day she keeps in touch with all her former team members.
Her leadership skills were already in place before she started up her own company but they were further refined as she took on various roles on volunteer committees and organizations.
While formally trained as a web site designer, Tanya had to learn to market her own business and earn the trust of clients. One of the ways she was able to do this was by volunteering with a business organization and giving half hour to 2 hour presentations on Web sites 101, Art of Networking, Marketing and Measuring and How to Run a Professional Home Based Business. This was one of her most favourite ways to market her company as she never had to "sell" her audience; she just spoke about the topics that she was knowledgeable about.
The journey that Tanya has taken has been an amazing experience and she is looking forward to continuing help start-ups, small business and NPOs achieve great things through their web sites.
