The recipient of many national and international awards (including and honorary doctorate), Dr. Sharma's research focuses on an evidence-based approach to managing obese patients.
Dr. Sharma has lectured widely on the aetiology and management of obesity and related health problems and is regularly featured as a medical expert in national and international TV and print media including the CBC, CTV, and TIME magazine.
Dr. Sharma maintains a widely-read blog where he regularly posts his provocative and insightful thoughts on obesity prevention and management.

Born in Berlin, Germany, Dr. Sharma grew up in India for most of his childhood before returing to Berlin, for his medical training in internal medicine and nephrology at the Free University of Berlin. After graduation, he quickly established himself as an internionally recognised clinical expert on salt and blood pressure.
In 2002, Arya M. Sharma was recruited from the Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany, to a prestigeous Canada Research Chair (Tier1) in Obesity and Management at McMaster University. In 2007 he accepted a position as Professor and Chair in Obesity Research and Management at the University of Alberta, where he is currently also the Medical Director of Alberta Health Services’ Provincial Alberta Obesity Program.
In 2005, he spearheaded the launch of the Canadian Obesity Network, which, with well over 8,000 members, has remarkably transformed the landscape of obesity research and management in Canada. Dr. Sharma is also Past-President of the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. Sharma lives with his wife in Edmonton, Canada.
