Mischa Popoff
Mischa Popoff is the author of the critically acclaimed book, Is it Organic? He is a Policy Advisor for The Heartland Institute, a Research Associate for The Frontier Centre for Public Policy and has delivered countless public lectures in defense of modern, science-based food production.
Unlike some critics of the organic industry, Popoff supports the principles of organic farming. He grew up on an organic grain farm in Saskatchewan and worked in the organic industry as an advanced organic farm and process inspector. As such, his lectures inform both supporters and detractors of the organic movement, employing the right balance of science and history, showing where the organic movement got it right in the early part of the last century and where this multi-billion-dollar industry went horribly wrong beginning in the late 1990s.
Popoff earned his B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan where he specialized in the history of the development of nitrogen for agriculture and warfare. He then inspected over 500 organic farms and processing facilities across Canada and the United States, earned HACCP-auditor accreditation, apprenticed four rookie inspectors under his wing, and organized the first sample-collection training course for advanced organic inspectors in North America. He left the inspection business when he realized there was no appetite in the industry to eliminate fraud and gross negligence and to improve upon the quality of organic food.
Since 2003, Popoff’s work to save the multi-billion-dollar organic industry from itself has been covered by Barron’s, The National Post, The Vancouver Sun, Epoch Times (English Edition) and The Packer, as well as by many reputable websites including the American Council on Science and Health,American Thinker, BigThink and RealClearScience.[1] He has co-authored articles and reports with Dr. Jay Lehr, Science Director at The Heartland Institute, and Dr. Patrick Moore, author of Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout, and is currently working on a forthcoming paper on the need to unify the organic and biotech sectors with Dr. Klaus Ammann, Director of the Botanical Garden at the University of Bern.
Popoff’s talks have been referred to by industry professionals as “highly educational” and an “entertaining, truthful message about the organic industry presented in a fair and balanced method.”
[1] Popoff has also been interviewed by NBC, MacLean’s Magazine, CTV, CBC, Sun News and by many other Canadian and American media outlets. To see samples of his work visit his website: www.isitorganic.ca.
