Everyone wants to be heard, but no one is really teaching anyone to listen!  This interactive speech will help your executives, sales people, and couples learn how to show you are listening.

Why I Speak: A Journey of Service, Resilience, and Purpose

Since 2006, I’ve had the privilege of sharing insights on communication and the power of listening. My journey to becoming a speaker wasn’t part of a carefully laid plan. In fact, for much of my life, I’ve felt like the wind was guiding me—sometimes gently, other times with force. What I’ve learned is that the wind often has a purpose, even when we don’t yet understand it.

My story begins at 17 when I enlisted in the United States Navy. My mother had to sign a waiver to let me join before I turned 18, and I told her this was my way of serving my country. The realities of war were far from easy, but the Navy shaped me. It taught me the values of honor, commitment, hard work, and resilience—foundations that have guided me ever since.

After my service, I pursued my education, focusing on Business and Medical Ethics. Along the way, I married my amazing wife and earned one of only four paid internships in philosophy in the nation. That opportunity required us to move to Omaha, Nebraska—a leap into the unknown, far from friends and family. The wind was blowing again, and I followed.

As part of that internship, I worked with doctors and families navigating end-of-life decisions. While the work was meaningful, it left my heart heavy. I realized I wasn’t cut out to serve in this way.

Then, another unexpected opportunity arose: my wife and I became houseparents at Boystown, a place dedicated to helping at-risk youth. For five years, we opened our home and hearts to 36 teenage boys. It was some of the most rewarding work I’ve ever done. During this time, we also welcomed twin sons into our family. Eventually, balancing our growing family and the needs of our Boystown kids became too much, and we made the difficult decision to step away.

With a completed graduate degree, I became a therapist and life coach, and my wife pursued teaching. While I found meaning in helping others, being a therapist took an emotional toll I hadn’t anticipated. Once again, I felt the wind urging me in a new direction.

This time, it blew me into the world of financial services as a consultant for PEAK Advisor Alliance. With no prior experience in the industry, I quickly learned and excelled, developing a program that helped financial advisors explore their own definitions of “True Wealth” and lead deeper, more meaningful conversations with their clients. For the first time in a long time, I felt I was making a real difference, even for those who were already financially successful. But I still wondered: Was this my ultimate purpose?

Eventually, I left to start my own consulting practice. Then, I partnered with a visionary Canadian, and together, we’ve created over 500 podcasts, reaching thousands of professionals. This experience reignited my passion for helping others find their voice and purpose.

Today, I’m returning to my roots. My book, Shut the F Up and Listen, reflects my mission to teach the art of engaged listening—a skill that transforms relationships, leadership, and success. As a keynote speaker, I work with sales leaders, executives, and relationship experts to help them unlock the power of listening in their lives and organizations.

My journey has been shaped by service, resilience, and a deep desire to make an impact. Whether speaking to a room of seasoned professionals or a team looking to improve their communication, my goal is to inspire, challenge, and empower others to truly listen—and in doing so, transform their lives and the lives of those around them.
