Susan Armstrong

AZ, US
An insipring speaker with a remarkable story of triumph against the odds.

“Abuse, street gangs, motorcycle gangs and being shot...   No, it is not the character progression and plot synopsis of the next Bruce Willis or Jet Li action blockbuster, but rather a summary of the struggles and experiences through which Susan Armstrong actually lived!   Most people outside of a movie set would not survive any one of these wrecking balls, let alone all five.   But Susan Armstrong not only survived them, she went on to reinvent herself, establish her own company, author a book and use her personal experiences as the blueprint for helping others to be successful and achieve their greatest potential.” -- Christopher Cussat, Recovery Solutions Magazine, July 2006

Susan Armstrong was a bright child, expected to accomplish great things.  However she learned two misguided lessons at a very early age that would rule her life for the next 30 years.  She learned that the greatest sin of all was to upset another human being and that in order for people to like her, she had to be “perfect.” Those two lessons kept Susan in a constant state of worry about pleasing others. They drained her self-esteem and left her with unhealthy coping skills. As a result, instead of doing well in school and going on to a rewarding career, Susan chose an alternate route.

At the tender age of eleven Susan had her first (and by no means last) taste of alcohol and drugs and joined her first street gang. It was a way of trading the demands of society for a life that defied rules, laws or regulations.  By age seventeen, Susan had graduated to motorcycle gangs where she assumed she’d find freedom; instead, Susan found herself at the mercy of an abusive and controlling partner among people who defined her every move. Stubbornly, she endured for many years, convinced she had found an alternative life style and was bound to it. Losing every opportunity that youth should have enjoyed, Susan surrendered herself to emotional and physical beatings, to feelings of humiliation and shame so intense, they could only be silenced by drugs and alcohol. Scarred, bruised and broken, unable to protect herself any longer from her partner, Susan’s life nearly ended with a single bullet. With death so close, she decided, during a brief flash of sanity, that only one choice remained: she had to escape her lifestyle.

Susan escaped to what should have been a joyful awakening, but there were no banners welcoming her back to mainstream society. Life on the street had truly made her an outcast. Old friends had grown into functional adults. Susan was nothing more than an alien who spoke in slang and who lacked even the simplest social skills of conversation or shaping an opinion.

Determined to be a “real” person, Susan set out on a journey to learn the rules of joining the human race. She returned to school, sought treatment for her addictions, and gradually I began to add self-respect to her interactions with other people.

Susan has spent many years developing her own sense of esteem and accomplishment, and now shares her knowledge and experience with others’ so they might find their own happiness and success. The principles Susan uses and teaches are the same principles she used to go from homeless, to making minimum wage, and eventually, to her current position as internationally known Speaker, award winning Trainer, and award winning Author of “An Invisible Prison” – a remarkable story of triumph over self-defeating behaviors.

For the past 14 years Susan has worked with global organizations to help them improve the way they do business.  Whether working with Sales, Management, Leadership, or Personal Development, Susan is able to captivate her and motivate with her warm style and entertaining wit.  Susan Armstrong has been awarded the CSTD Gold Award for Excellence in Training (2007), and has been honored by the Canadian Association of Mental Health as an “Extraordinary Person”. As well, she appears on many television and radio shows including Discovery Channel’s Health on the Line, Life Television, and many talk shows.
