About Gordon Viggiano

Do you have trouble:

  • Facing challenges
  • Embracing change
  • Examining relationships and attitudes
  • Finding happiness and success in ways previously unimagined?

Hope and encouragement in the face of adversity are universal needs. Humor and compassion are key to you envisioning this life-changing experience.

Our journey of recovery is still in progress. Gordon is now 8+ years post-stroke and we are happy to report that he is getting better all the time. We will discuss this life changing experience and the lessons that have come along with it. Our hope is to inspire people and help them see that good things can happen, even when one doesn't think it is possible. Gordon is certainly not fully recovered from his stroke so this isn't an "I did it and you can too" speech. I am in the middle of my recovery and so my perspective is from "the trenches."

Inspirational Speaker -- One man's story of overcoming obstacles

My Brain LLC                                 July 2012 - Present        Portland, Oregon Area

We were a typical family: we lived trying to do things right -- working hard, providing for the family, following Christian values. On Gordon's 51st birthday, out of nowhere, a terrible thing happened: he suffered a massive stroke! One might say we were dealt a dirty card, but we see it differently. The experience has been a true test of faith and perseverance.

The "trenches" can be inspiring; we have learned to take the responsibilty to fulfill all the tasks life constantly set before us and we would love to share what we are learning with you.

Putting Failure In Its Place

As a VP of Sales for a Fortune 500 company, a business owner, consultant and entrepreneur, I believe my career personified the focus and determination necessary to be a top-level business professional.  I was accomplished at solving problems and overcoming objections, and even better at training others to do so as well.

When a life-altering event changed my world and rendered me disabled, I used many of my sales skills to relentlessly pursue recovery, and I Put Failure In Its Place.  Along the way, I learned new lessons about myself, business, family and others.

In Putting Failure in Its Place, I talk about:

  • The process of succeeding
  • Taking aim at obstacles, not hiding behind them
  • How they can use the 4- step GIRD (Goals, Instruction, Repetition and Discipline) process to accomplish their business and personal goals

Putting Failure In its Place will inspire your team to look beyond their obstacles, their perceived personal limitations and challenge them to imagine and pursue what is possible.  I believe my story will get their attention, and I will leave them with a tool set (GIRD) that they can apply to your business and their lives.   Give your team with this winning strategy and watch them succeed.

My Brain Has A Hole In It

I give a multimedia presentation entitled "My Brain Has A Hole In It" which recounts the story of his massive stroke, his recovery so far, and the lessons learned through the experience. My story is unique in that I was 51 years old and had no risk factors when the stroke occurred. His was the result of a spontaneous bilateral carotid artery dissection. In the 30 minute presentation, I talk while images come on the screen behind him, emphasizing his message. Video clips are introduced occasionally, allowing other people to tell their part in the story. The audience laughs and cries as they gain empathy and understanding of the devastation stroke can bring.

I encourage each person to examine his or her own life and consider their blessings and challenges. It is an inspirational message told with humor and compassion. I have received a standing ovation nearly every time I have presented!

Recovering from my life altering situation, I had to deal with many life changing circumstances:

• Defining a personal vision for happiness and success
• Transforming fear, anxiety, and negative thinking into positive energy that helps you achieve your goals
• 3 things you need to do TODAY!

Gordon Viggiano was the key note speaker at our recent Comprehensive Stroke Center celebration. Gordon gave a moving presentation on the stroke survivor's experience from the Emergency Department, waking up in ICU, working hard in Rehab and then the continual recovery over the past 7 years. He is an engaging speaker who shares his personal story with humor and honesty. The audience was made up of nurses, therapists, physicians and hospital administration. Gordon's presentation gave everyone in the room a fresh perspective on stroke survivorship.

Gordon and Jill Viggiano's presentation, "My Brain Has a Hole in It" is an inspiring talk. Designed in an interesting format—a mixture of video clips, pictures and humor—it is thought provoking, humorous and provides insight from differing perspectives: the patient, the spouse and the children. Gordon was a wonderful speaker to work with because of his organization and follow through that made planning this event so much easier. This message is applicable to anyone.

There are times in business when you do a small thing but it evolves into a much more powerful experience than you intended. This was our experience with Gordon Viggiano. I had arranged for our staff of speech pathologists and occupational therapists to hear Gordon's story as a learning experience . . . we so rarely get to see the long-term results of therapy we are often key to initiating. What we received was so much more. Despite an audience aware of medical details and the exercises we often coach clients through, you could have heard a pin drop in the room folks were so riveted by Gordon's experience. Some in the audience noted they felt personally inspired in an area of their life of which I hadn't known the details. Others in the audience reported feeling reconnected to the passion of their work, emotional work that doesn't always feel rewarded.

Traumatic, life-altering events can happen to any one of us with no warning. On one hand, your story reminds us of this scary fact. But much more important, your story shows us the power of the human spirit and how determination, courage and faith can see us through. You and Jill both exemplify triumph over tragedy.

Your story that you shared with the Idaho Association of Health Underwriters in Boise has brought many positive responses from our members. It forces us to think about our lives in a different way-both from a personal and professional stand point. Change is a part of all of our lives, but we somehow think that terrible and traumatic events will never be a part of our lives. You show us how we can overcome small and enormous adversity.

Gordon shared his story, focusing on how he has approached his recovery from a nearly fatal stroke that could have been devastating. Jill made their experience relevant to our audience by sharing how the disability insurance coverage that their family had purchased made it possible for them to meet their financial obligations. Gordon's presentation was well rehearsed and professionally delivered. I would highly recommend him as an inspirational speaker.
