College media instructor and award-winning publisher Karl W. Beckstrand taught English to immigrants and refugees for more than a decade. He has been a volunteer chaplain at Stanford University Hospital, an in-flight patient interpreter for Angel Flight (medical charity), and a founding member of the San Francisco-based men's group, The Freemen.
Beckstrand’s works reflect a multicultural world. Since 2004, his company, Premio Publishing & Gozo Books, has produced and distributed works by women, Hispanics, Asians, and people of various abilities and faiths. It boasts 50 unique titles and 300 products (reviews by Kirkus, Publisher’s Weekly, and School Library Journal). Beckstrand’s best-selling titles have been selected by schools; federal, state, and local governments; businesses; and non-profits.
Raised in a cosmopolitan mecca (Silicon Valley), Beckstrand has lived in South America and visited four continents and twelve countries. He has studied the cultures of the Middle East and Western Civilization. In addition to near-fluent Spanish, he has basic comprehension of German, Italian, Portuguese, and ASL. His recent and distant ancestors immigrated from South Africa, Canada, Sweden, Scotland, Switzerland, France, England, and Ireland (there may be some Native Americans in the mix).
A natural with curriculum creation and life plotting, Beckstrand teaches media and design at a state college and is a regular contributor in television, radio, studio, and podcasts. He has sung in a couple of rock bands and loves volleyball. He can build a pc, kayak, handle a bow and arrow, water and snow ski, and ride horses (typically not at the same time).
Beckstrand earned a B.A. in journalism from Brigham Young University, an M.A. in international relations and conflict resolution from American Public University, and a certificate from Film A. Academy. He interned for a Massachusetts publisher and for Congress in D.C.
He encourages literacy and reading wherever he presents. His company has donated hundreds of books locally and internationally.
