
Dwight Brown
Dwight Brown is a critic, writer and creative director who inspires people to use the tools of writing and analyzing to enhance their enjoyment of film, express their opinions, tell their stories, market themselves, travel and live a more fulfilling life.
Film Critic: Dwight is the film critic for the National Newspaper Publishers Association (a syndication of 200 black newspapers; readership up to 15,000,000) and for the NNPA’s website BlackPressUSA.com. His reviews have appeared in the Hollywood Reporter, Emerge, Essence and Details. A longtime member of the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle, he served as its first African American chairman and created its New Director category. As a former HBO executive and film festival programming director he has a vast network of connections within the film and entertainment industry. He has a strong background in film and talent scouting and wants to share his expertise.
Screenwriter: As the creative director on the Cinemax series Erotic Confessions and Hotline, he has also written scripts for the series Blue Hotel. He wrote the script for the short film The Lost Juror, which was produced and shot by Dwight and his fellow jurors on a Nokia phone over a ten-day period during the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival; it won Best Short Jury Film. He wrote the script Black Irish and is working on a TV pilot project. He encourages people to tell their stories through the medium of film using his easy-to-understand 3-Act 3-Page treatment method.
Creative Director/Copywriter: Dwight Brown is a creative director and copywriter who has concepted and written ads, webpages, direct mail packages and other promotional materials. His Direct Marketing clients have included the New York Post, People, Newsweek, Good Housekeeping, Essence, Vanity Fair, Fantasy Football, Town & Country. He believes direct marketing is essential to any community and that creative direction and copywriting are skills that will benefit anyone interested in writing. He will share his experiences with audiences eager to hear his stories.
Travel Writer: As a film critic, moderator, talent scout executive or jurist he has regularly attended international film festivals including Cannes, Sundance, Toronto and the American Black Film Festival. As a travel writer his articles on Brazil, Morocco, Fiji, Thailand, the Caribbean and jazz festivals have been published in Black Enterprise, Chicago Tribune, Essence, BlackPressUSA.com. He would like to inspire people to travel, see the world, take Film Festival Vacations and take risks.
He earned his B.A. (Creative Arts) and M.A. (Human Relations -- Social Psychology) from San Francisco State University and is a graduate of the NAMIC Executive Leadership Development Program at the John E, Anderson Graduate School of Management at U.C.L.A. In addition, he was a member of the improvisational theater group, Split Second Theater.
